چکیده

Applying different filtering techniques to the temporal distribution of the signals measured with the Auger surface detector array (SD), we separate the electromagnetic and muonic signal components of air-showers. The filters are based on the different characteristics of the muonic and electromagnetic components in individual detectors, the former being composed of peaks above a smooth background due to the lower energy deposition of the latter photons and electrons. The muon signal is derived for showers of 10 EeV primary energy at a core distance of 1 km, with the aim of testing the predictions of hadronic interaction models. We compare the fraction of the muonic signal and the total signal to model predictions for proton and iron primaries in a range of zenith angles from 0 to 60◦.

Response of the Pierre Auger Observatory Water Cherenkov Detectors to Muons

Two test detectors similar to the Pierre Auger Observatory Water Cherenkov Detectors have been installed at the Observatory site and at the Institut de Physique Nucléaire d’Orsay. The signals from the tanks are read out using three 9” photomultipliers and analyzed by both a digital oscilloscope with high sampling frequency and the Auger surface detector electronics. Additionally, the detectors ...

Testing the surface detector simulation for the Pierre Auger Observatory

The building block of the surface detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory is a water Cherenkov tank. The response to shower particles is simulated using a dedicated program based on GEANT4. To check the simulation chain, we compare the simulated signals produced by cosmic muons at various zenith angles with experimental data from a special Cherenkov detector equipped with a muon hodoscope. The...

Performance of the Pierre Auger Observatory Surface Detector

The Surface Detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory will consist of 1600 water Cherenkov tanks sampling ground particles of air showers produced by energetic cosmic rays. The arrival times are obtained from GPS and power is provided by solar panels. The construction of the array is nearly completed and a large number of detectors has been operational for more than three years. In this paper th...

Multi-wavelength Calibration Procedure for the Pierre Auger Observatory Fluorescence Detectors

We present a method to measure the relative spectral response of the Pierre Auger Observatory Fluorescence Detector. The calibration was done at wavelengths of 320, 337, 355, 380 and 405 nm using an end-to-end technique in which the response of all detector components are combined in a single measurement. A xenon flasher and notch–filters were used as the light source for the calibration device...
